John Bailey

I am entering my 21st year in education and have the great opportunity to serve as the principal of both the Digital High School and the Achieve Online School. The first eight years of my career were spent in Arizona as a physical education teacher, athletic director, and football/basketball coach. The last thirteen years I have been with District 11 at the Digital High School serving as a teacher and the program coordinator. Both the Digital and Achieve Online schools are located at the Roy J. Wasson Academic Campus, which serves as the alternative education center for District 11. We are excited not only to be able to serve students within District 11 but across the state as well. Students and Parents: stop in and see me; the door is always open.

I am in my 11th year teaching math and love the opportunity to share how math connects us to the world in which we live. Planning a trip, saving for a favorite game, planting a garden, explaining the weather, or creating art, math makes it all easier. What a joy! I earned my B.S. in mathematics at South Dakota State University and have been fortunate to live in Colorado for twelve years. When I am not teaching math I enjoy spending time in the mountains with my husband and two children.

This is my fifth year teaching at District 11. Achieve Online is a great place to work! Prior to this I taught English in Pakistan and Afghanistan for years. I saw kids crammed in a room sitting on the floor with no heat because they wanted to learn.  They knew education was the single most important thing to change their future. Social Studies makes for great teaching everywhere; it also helps when traveling or living in 40+ countries like I have.  I received my Master's Degree and Teacher Certification through Colorado College. My wife, Bridget, and I like to hike and bike these mountains as well as garden, hanging out with friends, and exercise. Our four girls keep us moving too and I also have a male fish and ten chickens.

This is my lucky 13th year of being an educator, before which I was a Geochemist.  I truly believe that science is everywhere in today’s world, and I look forward to getting to know you, as you get to know the world around you better. I have taught science in oceans, caves, colleges, and classrooms, and I am truly excited to share this journey with you. Teaching at Achieve Online is a dream come true, and the other loves of my life are one girl and a pair of huskies.  When not delving into the scientific mysteries of the universe, you might find me with a bike, tent, snorkel, and some skis in my truck, headed for the wild unknown.
